About

NBT Bank, founded in 1856, is an independent, community bank headquartered in Norwich, New York. The bank serves mostly customers in New York, and it has 86 branches through upstate NY and a few locations in Vermont and Massachusetts. In addition to Alliance Bank, NBT also owns Pennstar Bank which has 35 offices in northeast Pennsylvania, and Hampshire First Bank, which has five locations in New Hampshire. NBT Bancorp, the parent company of NBT Bank, trades on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol NBTB. The company is very sound financially, and it has not missed a dividend payment since its founding in the mid-1850's. In other words, NBT Bank is in many ways the opposite of the bloated, risky, too-big-to-fail banks. NBT Bank offers checking, savings, personal loans, CDs, mortgages and other banking products. It also offers asset management and various services for businesses. The company boasts a large network of ATM machines and comprehensive online services. As of early 2013, NBT Bank is the 133rd largest bank in the United States with $7.55 billion in assets. NBT Bank now has 161 locations, 121 offices and over 1000 employees. In 2012, NBT Bank merged with Alliance Bank, N.A. Alliance Bank was a community bank based in central New York State. Alliance served approximately 90,000 households, primarily in the counties of Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga and Oswego. Alliance's branches took on the NBT Bank name. One of the benefits of using a bank like NBT is that you're working with a local lender with deeper ties to the community. All of NBT Bank's branches are located in a very limited geographical area, meaning that everyone from the bank tellers to the CEO understands the community that the bank serves. Here's one example of NBT's community involvement - it owns NBT Bank Stadium, a minor league baseball stadium in Syracuse, New York. In addition, the bank works with local businesses of every size, offering services such as insurance, retirement plan administration, and cash management. If you live in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, or New Hampshire and are looking for a strong local bank dedicated to serving your needs, NBT Bank is a good place to start.
